Ros Serey Sothea grew up in the countryside, singing
songs while planting
rice as a farmer girl. She sold boiled snails on the road and was recognized as "The Boiled Snail Girl" (one supply says it was cicadas, not snails). After her father had abandoned the family,
her mother allowed
her to turn out to be a expert singer and she
left for the capital Pnom Penh at the age of 17. She started out her
singing career singing standard Khmer song but drifted shortly closer to pop music as she grew to be more popular. She recorded at the studios of the National
Radio and sang in bars and golf
equipment such as the Mekong Night Club and the Lotus d'Or.
She married the singer Sos Math but the marriage was short-lived.
Pan ron
Pen Ran was once born in 1944 in Battambang Province, Cambodia. It had
been installed that she
had attended the same college as the younger Ros Serey
Sothea, every other popular singer of the identical era. In the 1960s,
Cambodian Head of State Norodom Sihanouk, a musician himself, inspired the improvement of popular track in Cambodia.
Initially, pop files from France
and Latin America had been imported into the usa and became popular, inspiring a flourishing pop song scene based totally in Phnom Penh
and led by way of singers
like Sinn Sisamouth. Pen Ran was an early entrant in this music scene, with the
hit tune "Pka
Kabas" in 1963, however she grew to become a country
wide superstar when
she started recording
with Sinn Sisamouth in 1966. Starting in the late 1960s, She recorded many
collaborations with Sisamouth and different extremely good Cambodian
singers of the period, while continuing her solo career. The debut of the popular Ros Serey Sothea in
1967 had little effect on Pen
Ran's profession and perhaps even broadened
her recognition as
the 2nd main lady of Cambodian famous music.
